Winter camping

Winter camping

Extraordinary and unforgettable, these are the first two terms that many of you associate with winter camping. Imagine waking up in the morning and looking at a snowy landscape. For the skiers among you there is the possibility to try out several ski areas during your winter holiday. Or do you dream of pleasantly warm temperatures and prefer to wake up in southern Europe? Beaches and sights are certainly not as crowded in the winter months as they are in summer. By the way, Spain is the top travel destination for campers with more than 200 campsites open in winter.

Alternative to hotels

Independence is also an essential factor here, as you can also explore the country and its people in the winter months, while many hotels are closing in winter, especially now due to Corona and the lack of staff.

In Germany alone, about a third of the campsites are open and some of them are specially geared towards winter camping. Some campsites not only offer a decorated Christmas tree for Christmas and New Year, but also come up with something very special for the holidays, such as B. Use of the sauna, torch-lit hike, hiking excursion, etc. Peace and quiet are always included. Before you start your journey, ask or check again which campsites or pitches are open on your itinerary.

While hotels in particular increase their prices for the holidays, when you travel with Hannes Camper in the winter months you benefit from the low prices of the off-season.

Winterized equipment

Our Hannes camper vans are very popular and suitable, especially in winter, due to their compact size and their features. Especially since they weigh a maximum of 3,5 tons. Our largest camper, the “Big Hannes”, is no more than 6,40 m long. This allows our guests to drive well even in the snow. Of course, our vehicles are equipped with all-season tires that are suitable for winter.

Here are a few tips and hints that you should consider when winter camping in the snow:

  • To keep you warm and cozy in the camper, always pay attention to the ventilation openings of the heater (on the outside of the camper), these should be free of snow and ice. With the heating openings in the camper, you should make sure that there are no objects in front of them so that the warm air can escape without any problems.
  • When camping in winter, don't forget to ventilate regularly to avoid moisture in the vehicle. It is best to open all windows and doors for five minutes at least twice a day, including the skylights. Our practical tip: It is best not to store wet clothing, skis or ski boots in the camper after a day of skiing. Most campsites in the ski regions offer practical drying rooms for ski equipment.
  • Please watch your gas supplies. In continuous operation (especially heating and hot water), an 11-k gas bottle lasts an average of three to a maximum of four days. So please take enough gas supplies with you on your trip. A gas bottle is generally always in your camper. You can easily add a second gas bottle to your booking as an add-on. So you are well prepared for the cold temperatures.
  • If possible, it is best to use the electricity grid of the respective campsite or parking space in order to conserve the camper's batteries. In any case, lay the power cables in such a way that they do not freeze or e.g. B. can be damaged by a snow plow.
  • Your pitch should be largely free of snow and ice so that your camper does not sink or become lopsided when the weather thaws. It is best to place the ramps that you will find in each of our vehicles under the wheels. It is best to release the handbrake after parking so that you do not freeze over.
  • Safety should always have the highest priority, especially in winter, so always drive with foresight and keep your distance from other road users. With snow and ice on the roads, the braking distance increases for every vehicle.

As you can see, winter camping is a little different than summer. With our tips, it will certainly work like clockwork. One thing is for sure, it's worth it.
